Ryan Garcia is a Lightning Rod
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Everyone loves a boisterous personality. Such a person can attract a crowd with their charisma and larger-than-life personality. Whether it’s saying controversial stuff or how they perform, it makes an entity go far. Take Ryan Garcia (24-1), for example.

The native of Los Alamitos, California, is proposing to Playboy models like Savannah Bond when he’s not boxing. For Bond, this might be unorthodox and… cringe. However, it draws attention and eyeballs to the boxer, making him more relevant. But those aren’t the only antics the 25-year-old is up to.

The Empire State Building Incident

It’s no secret that Ryan Garcia has plenty to say. That’s what he did when he saw Devin Haney at the Empire State Building on Tuesday. Various expletives were shared amongst each other, along with some shoves and aggression. Garcia got in Haney’s face with his shirt off, too. There was definitely no love lost between the two parties.

With the two boxers set to square off on Saturday at the Barclays Center, Tuesday’s altercation added to the drama. But it also caused an MLB team to pull out of a first-pitch ceremony at the last minute. That caused even more angst for the popular boxer.

Ryan Garcia vs. the Mets

With Ryan Garcia’s camp heading to Citi Field after the scuffle, the New York Mets got wind of the incident and pulled out last minute. Although Garcia met numerous Mets players and personnel, he was turned away.

The result? Another expletive-laced tirade where he “threatened to expose the Mets and MLB.” It’s safe to say that Garcia will probably be pulling for the New York Yankees from now on.

Is Ryan Garcia Being Bad… Bad for Boxing?

With Garcia’s aforementioned episodes, it seems he’s rubbing people the wrong way. While being that boisterous personality sounds good on the surface, it doesn’t attract many people. Whether it’s the New York Mets or another organization, it can lead to lost opportunities.

While boxing has craved for attention in recent years, Garcia might not be the best person to do so. But his antics could either draw more people to see him get pummeled, too. In essence, the 25-year-old is the definition of a double-edged sword.
