The New York Knicks looked like they were going to advance to the next round of the NBA playoffs on Tuesday night, but Tyrese Maxey had other plans. The Knicks came into their game five contest against the Philadelphia 76ers with a 3-1 series lead, and they led by six points with less than 30 seconds to play. That’s when Maxey took over. An and-one three and a logo three helped complete the comeback, and the game went to overtime.

Knicks fans were stunned when Tyrese Maxey took over in the late stages of the game and sent the game to OT, saving the season for the 76ers. New York has a lot of celebrity fans that sit court-side at their games, and there were some that were quite upset with Maxey on Tuesday night.

Jon Stewart was seen looking mad as ever, and Saturday Night Live star Tracy Morgan was seen giving Maxey the finger. Knicks fans thought that they had punched to their ticket to the next round of the playoffs, but Maxey and 76ers weren’t quite done yet.

At that point, the Knicks still had a chance to get the win in OT and Maxey’s late-game heroics would’ve been for nothing. New York got out to a good start in OT as they grabbed a quick five-point lead, but the 76ers went on a run after that and they didn’t trail from that point on. Jalen Brunson ended up making some big plays to tie it at one point, but Philadelphia ended up pulling away and they got the win in OT, 112-106.

Maxey ended up leading all scorers in the game as he finished with 46 points. He wasn’t going to let the 76ers lose that game. Maxey was 17-30 from the floor and 7-12 from deep. It was a special performance.

Jalen Brunson wasn’t too far behind him as he finished with 40 points. Brunson was 15-32 on field goals and 4/11 from deep. He had a great game, but it wasn’t enough to will the Knicks past the 76ers.

76ers survive, game six will be back in Philadelphia

Now, the series has a completely different feel to it. The 76ers will be back at home for game six and they are favored in that game. Philadelphia looked dead in the water in game five and it looked like the Knicks were going to advance. Now, the 76ers are a home win away from getting this series to game seven.

This series has definitely been one of the best series of the first round, and Tyrese Maxey leading that comeback is a big reason why. There have been a lot of snoozers as the top teams often make easy work of the lower seeds, but each game was been competitive in this series and there have been multiple really good finishes. We should see more of that in game six, and you know it’ll be exciting if this series gets to a game seven.

Game six will get going at 9:00 ET on Thursday night in Philadelphia. The game will be airing on TNT, and the 76ers are favored by 3.5 points over the Knicks.
