Dallas Cowboys Showing Interest In Dynamic Running Back
Matt Pendleton/Gainesville Sun / USA TODAY NETWORK

As the 2024 NFL Draft approaches, the Dallas Cowboys are eyeing the running back position as a key area for improvement.

Despite their efforts in free agency, where they notably allowed Tony Pollard to explore other opportunities without pursuing seasoned veterans like Derrick Henry or Austin Ekeler, the Cowboys find themselves in need of fresh talent to bolster their backfield.

While speculation about a potential reunion with Ezekiel Elliott lingers, it’s clear that any such move wouldn’t singularly resolve their running back situation. Therefore, the Cowboys are eager to secure a dynamic, young player who can emulate Elliott’s early impact and contribute significantly to their immediate competitiveness.

Recent reports from Aaron Wilson of KPRC indicate that Florida State standout Trey Benson is scheduled for a top-30 visit with the Dallas Cowboys, among other teams, underscoring the heavy interest surrounding him.

Additionally, the New York Giants are also vying for his attention, considering their recent loss of starting running back Saquon Barkley to another team in free agency.

While both NFC rivals are in contention for Benson’s talents, the Cowboys arguably have a more pressing need, given their current running back roster. While the Giants boast Devin Singletary, who showcased his rushing abilities admirably in the previous season with Houston, Dallas’s options include Rico Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn, Malik Davis, and Snoop Conner, none of whom have yet emerged as a definitive starter.

Benson’s reputation precedes him as one of the premier running backs in this year’s draft class, with many projecting him to be among the first selected.

Standing at an imposing 6 feet tall and weighing 216 pounds, Benson’s impressive collegiate career at Florida State earned him consecutive appearances on the All-ACC second team. Notably, he led his team in rushing yards during the past season, tallying 906 yards and 14 touchdowns on 156 carries, while also showcasing his versatility with 20 receptions for 227 yards and a touchdown.

Moreover, Benson’s remarkable speed, exemplified by his 4.39-second 40-yard dash time at the NFL scouting combine, makes him an enticing prospect for teams like the Dallas Cowboys, who are in search of a dynamic, all-around running back to energize their offense in the upcoming draft.
